September 28 – share your stories

September 28 is International Day for Safe, Legal and Accessible Abortion – now known as International Safe Abortion Day. International Safe Abortion Day came about as a result of campaigning and activism for safe abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean and has since spread, with September 28 being an important day of activism for abortion activists worldwide.

Currently, the World Health Organisation estimates that 25 million unsafe abortions occur around the world every year, and 3 out of 4 abortions were unsafe in Africa and Latin America. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the WHO estimates that there are 520 deaths per 100000 unsafe abortions, and women on the African continent are disproportionately affected, with 29% of all unsafe abortions occurring in Africa, and 62% of deaths due to unsafe abortion occurring on the continent.
