Register for a webinar on Adolescents' need for and use of safe abortion services in ESA
28th September marks International Safe Abortion Day. This year, the Hivos Regional Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Fund (RSRHR Fund) has teamed up with The Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR), The Right Here Right Now (RHRN) Zimbabwe platform and Marie Stopes Zimbabwe to shed light on ‘Adolescents’ need for and use of safe abortion services in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA)’.
Majority of countries in ESA have highly restrictive abortion laws and policies. According to the Guttmacher Institute Updates for 2018, Africa has the highest number of women dying from complications related to unsafe abortions (9%) and an unmet need for contraceptives of 59 million in 2017 resulting in 21.6 million unintended pregnancies. In southern Africa, alone 34 abortions occur in every 1000 women aged 15-44 years. Access to safe abortion services is critical to prevent any devastating injury and infection that can follow as a consequence from an unsafe abortion. Facts like these, have brought about a global movement with advocates asking for reviews of restrictive abortion policies, as well as for programs and policies on abortion and post-abortion care provision to be sensitive to the needs of adolescents.
In this webinar you will hear from advocates and health professionals on their experiences & findings from working on abortion rights in complex environments. We aim to inspire action in the promotion of universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights for all
