In a world where girls and women are denied the right to choose whether and when to have children, the alternative to safe, legal abortion is unsafe and illegal abortion. Advocating for the rights and services to which most governments and international bodies have committed themselves is a way to save lives and prevent suffering. Share your experiences of dealing with these issues in this discussion forum.

In countries with restrictive abortion laws, abortion rates are high, most abortions are unsafe, and girls and women risk death, injury and disability to terminate a pregnancy. Ironically, legal restrictions on abortion do not reduce the demand for abortion services. Instead, they compel women to risk their lives and health by seeking illegal and unsafe abortions. On the other hand, removing legal restrictions on abortion results in reduced rates of maternal mortality.
Abortion rates and maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion are the lowest in the countries with the most permissive abortion laws.

In South Africa, the law provides for abortion on request up to 12 weeks. The legalisation of abortion has resulted in a 91% drop in mortality among women undergoing abortion. However, there are still so many barriers to accessing a safe legal abortion that half of all girls and women resort to using illegal ‘backstreet’ providers.

What is the situation in your country? What does the law say about abortion and what are the consequences for girls and women?
If you are interested in comparing the laws on abortion in different countries, the Center for Reproductive Rights has produced The World’s Abortion Laws map http://worldabortionlaws.com/map/
