World Immunisation Week

World Immunisation Week begins today and ends on 30 April. The theme for 2019 is ‘Protected Together: Vaccines Work!’.

The campaign aims to promote vaccination to prevent many life-threatening and debilitating diseases.

Vaccination is recognised as one of the most effective and cost-effective preventative measures. Despite this, there are still around 20 million unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children worldwide.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (no poverty) and 3 (good health and well-being) rely on expanding the access to vaccinations and on willingness to vaccinate.

Vaccination also provides a point of contact between health workers and children and adolescents, an important factor in monitoring and promoting health.
