World Toilet Day

19 November is World Toilet Day. This day is devoted to advocacy and awareness of the importance of WASH and to tackling the global sanitation crisis so that we may achieve SDG number 6 – clean water and sanitation.

Toilets and adequate hygiene facilities are incredibly important in the fight against disease. Not only this, but they protect the dignity of the people who use them, and are instrumental in the fight for menstrual health management.

Many people who menstruate do not have access to safe, clean and accessible hygiene facilities where they can safely manage their menstrual cycles with dignity. The WHO estimates that more than half the world’s population (or 4.2 billion people), live without safely managed sanitation.
